Barbell plate calculator

Count equal-sized plates per side for a target loaded barbell weight.

Calculated result

2

Equal-size plates to load on each side

Total plate weight on one side: 40 kg

Results are estimates or simple arithmetic, not medical or investment advice.

How it works

Count matching plates on each side of a barbell to hit a target loaded weight.

Method and limitations

Subtract the empty bar, split remaining load equally between sides and divide by a single plate weight. The chosen equal-plate configuration may not meet every target exactly.

Plates per side = (target loaded weight − empty bar) ÷ (2 × plate weight).

Frequently asked questions

Can I mix plate sizes?

This version only counts equal-sized plates; it does not solve mixed combinations.

Are both sides balanced?

The formula assumes symmetrical loading on each side.
