Body Fat Percentage Calculator (Navy)

Body Fat Percentage Calculator (Navy)

Adult circumference-based body fat estimate from height, neck, waist/abdomen and, when needed, hip. Sensitive to measurement error.

Calculated result

18.46%

A circumference-based estimate only, not a DEXA measurement or medical diagnosis. Measuring sites affect the result.

Results are estimates or simple arithmetic, not medical or investment advice.

How it works

This adult body fat calculator estimates a percentage using circumference measurements and the equation commonly described as the US Navy method. It is different from BMI and not a direct measurement.

Method and limitations

Measure the neck just below the larynx without overtightening the tape. Use the abdomen at navel level for the male equation, or natural waist plus widest hip for the female equation. Stand upright and measure at a normal relaxed exhalation. Centimeters are converted to inches for the equations; this calculator does not replicate an official service assessment.

Male: %fat = 86.010 × log10(abdomen − neck) − 70.041 × log10(height) + 36.76. Female: %fat = 163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log10(height) − 78.387. Measurements in inches.

Where should I place the measuring tape?

Measuring locations affect results. Read the step-by-step measuring guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does tape measurement give my exact body fat?

No. Measuring location, tape tension and fat distribution change the estimate.

Is waist measured the same way for both equations?

No. The male formula uses abdomen at the navel; the female formula uses the natural waist.

Why is it different from BMI?

BMI uses height and weight, while this estimate uses circumference measurements.

Is this a clinical assessment?

No. Seek qualified guidance for individual health decisions.
